However, some very very major flaws.
First 50% of the time when the engine is turned off, after being plugged in the 4250 will not come back on or will lock up in the Warning blue screen mode.
Powering the unit down and up solves the problem but it takes 1 to 2 minutes to do this plus it happens very often.
Second after the Bluetooth as been paired, it will not remember the set up after the unit is powered off. Thus you have to reset up your phone and the pair the unit again with the Magellan. Another frustrating pain. Supposedly, they will have a firmware update in the second quarter of 08 to fix this problem. But it doesn't solve the failure to restart.

- I've had mine for a week. The only time I notice it will not come back on when powered up is if it is completely powered down, instead of in sleep mode. I think this is by design, since it is entirely consistent. Is your battery charged, otherwise it might be shutting itself down. Also I have never had it lock up on the warning screen. Sometimes it takes a little longer to clear after I hit ok (maybe 15 seconds).
Two theories- one is using blue tooth is somehow causing this problem ( I don't use that) or your unit is a little funky (very scientific term).
Actually this isn't totally true. Once you pair your phone you set up a shortcut on the 4250. Then when powering the unit back on, you just hit the phone icon and then the connect icon. This will reconnect your phone without having to re-pair the two..the phone doesn't get touched and no passwords are needed. It's still more steps then necessary..the Garmin 680 I had automatically reconnected on powering up the unit but at least it's not as bad as having to pair the 2 devices every time.Second after the Bluetooth as been paired, it will not remember the set up after the unit is powered off. Thus you have to reset up your phone and the pair the unit again with the Magellan.- brucefan
very interesting..
tell me how to set this up. I don't see anything in the instructions sheet that elaborates on this.
thanks
I don't even think it's in the manual..found it by mistake. Don't pair your phone with the 'Pair Mode' icon. Instead, go into the Bluetooth icon (make sure your phone is set for others to discover it). Choose 'Explore a Bluetooth Device'. When your phone is listed, select it and choose the icon with the magifying glass over the bluetooth icon. On mine, it then says 'Voice Gateway'..select it and it the connect icon on the bottom. This will initiate the pairing mode..pair as usual. Once complete, you should then be able to go into 'My Shortcuts' and see your phone listed. At this point, you reconnect the devices upon rebooting by hitting the phone icon on the main screen and then the 'connect' icon without having to pair the two.brucefan

thanks- Brucefan,
You are the man.
After many many tries, I finally got it right as you said it would.
Now that's one problem solved. I am dismayed that your instructions are no where to be found in the 4250 set up. It is a little complicated I must admit. I question whether I could do it again though.
Now I wish I could solve my power problem
thanks
That's funny..when I deleted my connection to redo it in order to write the instructions it took me about 4 times before I figured out how I did it in the first place..and even when I figured it out it took a few times for it to work properly. There's definately something not kosher with the bluetooth in this device but once it's set up, I've never had a problem reconnecting to my phone.
I question whether I could do it again though.

I have the same power problem..I'd say once a week it just refuses to turn on or freezes on the settings screen. Hopefully a firmware upgrade will solve the problem but for $249, I think it's a great GPS even with the flaws.- Well,
I copied and pasted your instructions in a document, created a 4250 folder and there it sits. Hopefully I will not use have to use it again. - Hi there,
I'm having the exact problem. Just turned off Magellan 4250 and now it would not want to turn on no mater how many time I have tried. How were you able to turn it after all,
Thanks for advise! - This happens about 1 out of 3 or 4 start ups.
If I get no start up, (black screen)
I have to hold down the power button on the 4250 for about 1 to 2 minuets.
If it starts but gets locked up in the Warning blue screen, then I have to power down with the power button on the 4250 and then power it back up. It doesn't seem to take as long when the screen is locked up in this position.
I called Magellan on this problem. They have pitiful service. Spoke to someone that had an Indian sounding accent (dot, not feather). After working with me on the 'never shut down', sleep in 10 minutes, 30 minutes etc. Nothing worked. He gave me a RA number to send it back for repairs but I question if that would solve the problem. I think this is a problem built into the unit itself. As brucefan says, maybe they will come up with some firmware that will fix it permanently.
Have you tried pressing the reset button for about ten seconds and then the start button?

.
Yes, and it will start back up again but it still does it every 3 to 4 startups.Have you tried pressing the reset button for about ten seconds and then the start button?- Well, mine was doubly flawed.
I was given the 4250 on Christmas, but started using it in January. I'd sporadically had the freeze and lock-up problems. The first “big”problem I had tho was the BT phone feature. It worked for about the first week, then just stopped. From the main menu, if I chose phone, it simply would repeat back 'Phone', and do nothing. It would say it over and over, how ever many times I chose it. All other features worked fine. I contacted Support, who wanted me to send it back to receive a new one, but I didn't want to be without it.
But then two days ago, my luck ran out.
I plugged the unit in my car, and it froze on the bootup screen. It typically does for a minute or two, so I wasn't concerned. But after about 15 minutes I was. I reset it, turned it off, on, etc. I waited a total of about 2 hours before calling tech support, went thru the same standard 'reboot, reset, power off/on' that I had been doing all along. Same thing, just frozen on the same screen (with the full progress bar).
This time Support said to send it in for a repair. I put up a stink, and they agreed to send a new one out 3-day shipping and I can then send mine back.
I'd be happy with that, especially since I might get use of bluetooth again, but I'm very aggravated that I can't retrieve my address book and previous destinations (no, I didn’t backup!). Grrrrrr. - Well, I hope you got the sale price because these 4250's are not worth full price. Everyone seems to be waiting out and hoping for a firmware change but I don't think it will come because as we speak, Magellan is coming out with a 4350 and a 4360 model as replacements for not much more that these 4250's are.
Interestingly enough, the freeze problem seems to have disappeared.
But in spite of the multiple steps to connect to blue tooth set up finally solved, I still have to connect to the BT with 2 annoying finger pushes every time I start the car. Remember, this is an Indian company (dot, not feather). - I suspect that the only thing Inidan about it ( and I think this is changing) is the customer service group they contracted out to. More than likely engineered and built in China. I think the biggest problem is that it is now owned by a company, Shah Capital, that has its eye only on short term profits. When they have milked everything they can out of it they will dump Magellan on the side of the road. When I first went to the Shah website they didn't even have Magellans URL correct. I sent them a nice email that suggested they get to know their holdings well enough to know the correct address for the web site. Shortly after they changed it from www.magellan.com to www.magellangps.com.
- good think you contacted them 'very nicely'. I guess I'm not that sweet and sugary.
I won't have my bluetooth phone until next month but am saving this info for when I do. One question though. Where is the 'My Shortcuts' folder? I don't seem to have one( 4250 ). Does it appear after doing this procedure above or something.brucefan

Not sure if its the same on all models, but on my 3140 the manual specifically states that even though the devices are paired you still need to establish a connection. It also states that 'If your mobile phone doesn’t support Hands-free service and just supports the Headset service, you needn’t connect. If you dial a number out from your mobile phone or incoming call the Headset service shall be connected automatically. The main interface shall show up with a status message xx connected, partial function supported only'. It seems that the BT issues may be related to the profiles supported by the phone. My iPhone seems wont connect automatically unless I dial out using the number pad (wont let me dial out of the address book) or manually hit the connect button. Incoming calls dont route to the unit unless I connect manually before hand. Its not ideal, but for $120 I got a workable hands free set and GPS unit.
- My bluetooth wont re-connect until I select teh device from the menu on the phone. Having to do this every time I get in the car is a huge waste of time and its quite ridiculous. I don't even use teh feature I jsut use my headset.. It works fine on my Dad's Garmin GPS though.

Phone works great over the GPS. Very good clarity on both ends. Even my 83 year old Dad who is almost deaf, and as a rule has a hard time hearing me on my cell, had no trouble understanding me over the GPS/Phone combo.
