The well that is the Star Trek lore is a deep one, so it's always a good time to dip your toe into, or even have a swim. In fact, casual and hard core fans alike may get trapped there if they peer into the waters for too long. Originally a somewhat successful book published in 1991, the CD-ROM contains the same plethora of information from the technicalities behind Warp drives, to the fanciful facilities in the Captain's Quarters. While it could be easy for this to be a glorified 'making of' of the television show, the contents it provides is presented as if it were fact.
Using Quicktime's new-fangled VR technology (basically 360° wraparounds), you can explore the ship at your leisure or as part of a tour hosted by Commander Riker himself. If you go your own way, you can travel the various rooms via nodes loke a first-person adventure or zip to them using the dots found on the map.
Other than this, you can get a static closeup view on some items for a more detailed look. The mouse icon will change when hovering over them but with a viewing window so small, it can be quite hard to tell what it is. Thankfully, the wraparound panoramas can be zoomed in and out using the + and - keys.
An updated version (which remains elusive to me) was released as a bonus for the DVD release of one of the seasons, though it was exclusive to American Best Buy stores. From what I can tell, it only updated the installer to work on Windows XP. As such, with this working version using PCEm, I'm in no real rush to find it.
Overall, it's a pretty nifty application that's perfect for any Trekkie out there.
